Business

The Cluetrain Manifesto

For most of history, business has been an essentially human activity, taking place in the bazaar. Communication was free wheeling and rapid. More recently, communication in business has been strictly controlled by corporate interests through professional marketing, imaging, advertising, public relations, and customer "service" scripted according to carefully set policy. The customer hasn't had a whole lot of opportunity to say much about it. Neither has the low-level employee far down in the corporate heirarchy. But very recently the torrential communications channels of the Internet has allowed the people to take back the market from the corporation; similarly it has empowered the average employee by giving them a voice.

It's important to understand that not only is there nothing a corporation can do to prevent this; it has already happened. Businesses can only survive in the networked age by understanding and working with the principles espoused in the Cluetrain Manifesto. Those that don't won't just be crushed by their competition; they'll be ridiculed mercilessly by the public until they either come to terms with it or just go out of business.
